Every pest control LSA account we audit has at least 3 of these mistakes. The most expensive one, having too few pest types enabled, is also the easiest to fix (10 minutes in your dashboard). This guide goes deeper than the brief mistake list in our main pest control LSA guide, with root cause analysis and fix protocols for each mistake.

Severity Legend

CRITICAL Directly kills lead volume or ranking. Fix immediately.

MODERATE Reduces quality, increases CPL, or limits growth. Fix within 1-2 weeks.

MINOR Leaves money on the table. Fix when you have time.

The 12 Mistakes

Mistake 1: Only Enabling Common Pest Types CRITICAL

Impact: 40-60% lost lead volume Fix time: 10 minutes

Diagnosis: You only have 5 to 8 pest types enabled. You are not receiving leads for termites, bed bugs, wildlife, or commercial pest control even though you offer these services.

Root cause: During setup, most companies check the obvious boxes (ants, roaches, spiders, rodents) and skip niche categories. Each missing pest type is a category of searches where you do not exist.

Fix Protocol
  1. Log into your LSA dashboard
  2. Go to Profile and Budget, click the pencil icon on Job Types
  3. Enable every pest type you service: ants, roaches, spiders, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, bed bugs, rodents, wasps/hornets/bees, termites (inspection and treatment), silverfish, earwigs, centipedes, stink bugs, wildlife removal, commercial pest control
  4. Allow 3 to 7 days for Google to start matching you against new categories

Mistake 2: Not Disputing Invalid Leads CRITICAL

Impact: 10-20% of budget wasted Fix time: 15 minutes/week

Diagnosis: You pay for robocalls, wrong numbers, and leads outside your service area without requesting credits.

Fix Protocol
  1. Set a 15-minute weekly calendar reminder (Monday mornings)
  2. Review all leads from the past week and listen to call recordings
  3. Dispute: robocalls, wrong numbers, outside service area, pests you do not handle, caller hung up before connecting
  4. Track your dispute rate. If over 25% of leads are invalid, adjust your profile settings.

Mistake 3: Missing or Expired Pesticide Applicator License CRITICAL

Impact: Ad paused, 0 leads Fix time: 1-5 business days

Diagnosis: Your ad suddenly stopped showing. Dashboard shows verification alerts.

Fix Protocol
  1. Check your LSA dashboard for verification alerts
  2. Verify your pesticide applicator license is current in your state
  3. Upload updated documents through the verification portal
  4. Contact LSA support if reactivation takes more than 5 business days

Mistake 4: Max Per Lead Bid Too Low CRITICAL

Impact: Ad rarely shows, minimal leads Fix time: 5 minutes

Diagnosis: Lead volume dropped after switching to Max Per Lead mode. Your ad rarely appears in search results.

Fix Protocol
  1. Switch back to Maximize Leads mode, or
  2. Set Max Per Lead cap 10-15% above your historical average CPL
  3. Check benchmarks in our pest control CPL guide
  4. Monitor for 2 weeks. If still low, increase cap by another 10%.

Mistake 5: No After-Hours or Weekend Coverage CRITICAL

Impact: Missing 30-40% of weekend/evening leads Fix time: 1-2 days to set up

Diagnosis: You miss calls on evenings and weekends. Homeowners who see a rat at 7 PM or wasps on Saturday morning need help now, not Monday at 9 AM.

Fix Protocol
  1. Set up call forwarding or answering service for after-hours
  2. Extend your LSA business hours to include evenings and weekends
  3. At minimum, capture the lead details and call back within 30 minutes

Mistake 6: Not Training Technicians to Pitch Recurring Plans MODERATE

Impact: Missing $1,620+ in LTV per customer Fix time: 1 training session

Diagnosis: Your plan conversion rate is under 15%. Technicians complete the one-time treatment and leave without mentioning the recurring option.

Fix Protocol
  1. Create a simple plan pitch script for technicians: "We solved today's problem, but pests come back seasonally. Our quarterly plan costs $45/month and covers [list of pests] year-round. Most homeowners find it saves them money versus calling each time."
  2. Train every technician on the pitch. Role-play until it feels natural.
  3. Track plan conversion rate by technician. Reward top converters.
  4. Target 25-40% plan conversion rate on one-time residential calls.

Mistake 7: Service Area Too Broad MODERATE

Impact: Slow response, diluted ranking Fix time: 15 minutes

Diagnosis: Getting leads 30+ miles away. Response time on distant leads is poor. Ranking in core area is weaker than expected.

Fix Protocol
  1. Narrow service area to zip codes within 30-minute drive
  2. For commercial accounts, you can extend slightly since response can be next-business-day
  3. If serving multiple metros, create separate LSA profiles per location

Mistake 8: Pausing LSA in Winter MODERATE

Impact: 3-6 week ranking recovery Fix time: Set floor budget

Diagnosis: You pause LSA November through February and your spring ranking is worse than the previous year.

Fix Protocol
  1. Never pause. Set a minimum floor of $100-$150/week during winter.
  2. Winter leads (rodents, indoor pests) have the highest plan conversion rate (35-45%)
  3. If already paused, reactivate immediately in Maximize Leads mode
  4. See our budget guide for month-by-month calendar

Mistake 9: Setting Budget Too High in Winter Without Adjusting MODERATE

Impact: Overspending during low-demand months Fix time: Monthly budget adjustments

Diagnosis: Your January spend is the same as your July spend, but you get 1/4 the leads. Your cost per booked job in winter is 3x your summer number.

Fix Protocol
  1. Use the seasonal multipliers from our budget guide
  2. Set January/February at 0.70x baseline, ramp to 1.40x-1.50x for June/July
  3. Adjust monthly, not just once per season

Mistake 10: No Review Collection System MODERATE

Impact: Stuck below 50 reviews, weak ranking Fix time: 1 hour setup

Diagnosis: Under 30 reviews after 6+ months on LSA. Competitors with 80+ reviews outrank you consistently.

Fix Protocol
  1. Create a Google review link and save as a phone text template
  2. Ask every customer after service completion
  3. Send follow-up text within 2 hours with the link
  4. During peak season, target 5-8 reviews per month. See our review strategy guide.

Mistake 11: Ignoring Commercial Pest Control Category MINOR

Impact: Missing highest-ROI leads Fix time: 5 minutes to enable

Diagnosis: You serve restaurants and offices but have not enabled the commercial pest control category in LSA.

Fix Protocol
  1. Enable commercial pest control in your job types
  2. Mention commercial services in your profile description
  3. Upload photos of commercial treatment work (restaurant kitchens, office buildings)

Mistake 12: Not Tracking Performance by Pest Type MINOR

Impact: Cannot optimize job type mix Fix time: Set up a tracking spreadsheet

Diagnosis: You look at blended CPL and ROAS without knowing which pest types drive your best returns.

Fix Protocol
  1. Categorize every LSA lead by pest type
  2. Track: pest type, CPL, booked (yes/no), ticket value, plan signup (yes/no)
  3. Review monthly. See our ROI benchmarks for targets by pest type.

Week 2: After-hours coverage + dispute process
Set up answering service or call forwarding. Start weekly dispute cadence. Protects ranking and recovers wasted budget.
Week 3: Recurring plan training + service area
Train technicians on plan pitch. Tighten service area. These improve long-term ROI and lead quality.
Week 4+: Reviews + seasonal budgeting + tracking
Start review collection system, set up seasonal budget calendar, begin pest-type performance tracking.

Pest Control LSA Mistakes FAQs

What is the biggest LSA mistake pest control companies make?

Only enabling common pest types while missing high-value categories. Companies that enable all 15 to 20 pest types see 40 to 60% more lead volume.

Why am I not getting enough leads from pest control LSA?

Most common causes: too few pest types enabled, bid cap too low, expired license, or poor response time. Check dashboard for alerts, then expand pest types.

Should pest control companies promote recurring plans through LSA?

The plan conversion happens during the service visit, not in the ad itself. Train technicians to pitch after completing treatment. Target 25 to 40% conversion rate.

Is it a mistake to pause pest control LSA in winter?

Yes. Keep a $100 to $150/week floor. Winter leads are cheaper and have the highest recurring plan conversion rate (35 to 45%).

How often should I dispute LSA leads?

Weekly. 15 minutes every Monday morning. Most companies recover 10 to 20% of budget through disputes.
