In This Guide
Every electrician LSA account we audit has at least 3 of these 12 mistakes. Some have 8 or more. The frustrating part is that most of these are simple profile settings and operational habits, not complicated marketing strategy. Fix the critical ones first and you will typically see improvement within 2 to 4 weeks.
This guide goes deeper than the brief mistake list in our main electrician LSA guide. Each mistake below includes severity rating, diagnosis signs, root cause, and a step-by-step fix protocol. For the ranking factors these mistakes affect, see our electrician ranking factors guide.
Severity Legend
CRITICAL Directly kills lead volume or causes ranking collapse. Fix immediately.
MODERATE Reduces lead quality, increases CPL, or limits ranking potential. Fix within 1 to 2 weeks.
MINOR Leaves money on the table but does not break anything. Fix when you have time.
The 12 Mistakes
Mistake 1: Only 3 to 5 Job Types Enabled CRITICAL
Diagnosis: Your lead volume is low despite a competitive budget. You are not appearing for searches you know you should be getting (panel upgrades, generators, rewiring).
Root cause: During initial LSA setup, many electricians only enable their most common services (outlets, switches, maybe lighting). They skip panel upgrades, generator installs, dedicated circuits, inspections, and other categories because those jobs come in less frequently.
- Log into your LSA dashboard at ads.google.com/localservices
- Go to Profile and Budget, then click the pencil icon on Job Types
- Enable every job type you can legitimately deliver: outlet, switch, ceiling fan, lighting, smoke detector, CO detector, breaker/fuse, panel upgrade, rewiring, generator, dedicated circuits, electrical inspection
- Note: EV charger installation is not a separate checkbox. Mention it in your profile description instead.
- Save and allow 3 to 7 days for Google to start matching you against the new categories
Mistake 2: Missing or Expired License/Insurance CRITICAL
Diagnosis: Your ad suddenly stopped showing. You may see an alert in your LSA dashboard about verification issues.
Root cause: Google periodically re-verifies licenses and insurance. If your electrician license expired or your insurance lapsed without updating Google, your ad gets paused without much warning.
- Check your LSA dashboard for any alerts or notifications about verification
- Verify your state electrician license is current and not expired
- Confirm your general liability insurance is active with updated certificate
- Upload updated documents through the LSA verification portal
- Contact LSA support if reactivation takes more than 5 business days
Mistake 3: No Answering Service or After-Hours Coverage CRITICAL
Diagnosis: Your missed call rate is above 20%. You see "missed" labels on leads in your dashboard. Your ranking has been declining despite good reviews.
Root cause: Solo electricians and small shops miss calls because they are on job sites with their hands in a panel. Google tracks your missed call rate and factors it into ranking. High miss rates push you down in the results.
- Set up call forwarding to a second phone (spouse, office manager) as an immediate fix
- Sign up for an answering service ($100 to $300/month): Ruby, AnswerConnect, or Smith.ai
- Create a call script: "Thank you for calling [Company]. How can we help you today?" plus basic qualification questions (location, type of work, urgency)
- Set up after-hours routing if you take emergency calls. Extend your LSA business hours accordingly.
- Monitor your missed call rate weekly. Target under 10%.
Mistake 4: Max Per Lead Bid Set Too Low CRITICAL
Diagnosis: You switched to Max Per Lead mode and lead volume dropped 50% or more. Your ad rarely appears when you search for electrician services in your area.
Root cause: Setting a per-lead cap below market rate means Google cannot win the auction for you. If your market CPL is $45 and your cap is $30, you lose almost every auction.
- Switch back to Maximize Leads mode if you are unsure of your market CPL
- Or set your Max Per Lead cap 10 to 15% above your historical average CPL
- Check your CPL benchmarks in our electrician CPL guide for your market size
- Monitor lead volume for 2 weeks after changing. If still low, increase cap by another 10%.
Mistake 5: Not Disputing Invalid Leads CRITICAL
Diagnosis: You are paying for robocalls, wrong numbers, calls from outside your service area, and leads for services you do not offer. Your effective CPL is 15 to 25% higher than it should be.
Root cause: Most electricians do not realize they can dispute bad leads. Or they know but do not make time to do it weekly. Google gives you 30 days to dispute a lead, and valid disputes get credited back to your budget.
- Set a 15-minute weekly calendar reminder (Monday mornings work well)
- Log into your LSA dashboard and review all leads from the past week
- Listen to call recordings. Flag any that are: robocalls, wrong numbers, outside your service area, for services you do not offer, or where the caller hung up before connecting
- Click "Dispute" on each invalid lead and select the appropriate reason
- Track your dispute rate. If more than 25% of leads are invalid, your profile settings need adjustment.
Mistake 6: Service Area Too Broad MODERATE
Diagnosis: You are getting leads from areas 30+ miles away. Your response time on these leads is slow because you cannot get there quickly. Your ranking in your core market is weaker than expected.
Root cause: Claiming a 40 to 50 mile radius feels like it should bring more leads, but it actually dilutes your ranking across a wider area. Google rewards electricians who respond fast in a focused zone.
- Narrow your service area to zip codes where you can respond within 30 to 45 minutes
- Remove zip codes where you consistently get leads you cannot service quickly
- If you serve multiple distinct areas, consider separate LSA profiles per location
Mistake 7: No Review Collection System MODERATE
Diagnosis: You have been on LSA for 6+ months and still have under 30 reviews. Competitors with 80+ reviews consistently rank above you.
Root cause: Hoping customers leave reviews on their own does not work. Only 5 to 10% of satisfied customers leave a review without being asked. You need a systematic process.
- Create a Google review link (search "Google review link generator" and paste your business name)
- Save the link as a text template on your phone
- Ask every customer in person after completing the job
- Send a follow-up text within 2 hours with the review link
- Target 3 to 5 new reviews per month minimum. See our review strategy guide for templates.
Mistake 8: Pausing LSA During Slow Months MODERATE
Diagnosis: You paused LSA in December or January to "save money." When you restarted in March, lead volume was 40 to 60% lower than the previous year and took weeks to recover.
Root cause: Google's ranking algorithm rewards consistency. Pausing tells Google you are unreliable. When you restart, you re-enter the auction without ranking momentum.
- Never pause completely. Set a minimum floor of $150/week during slow months.
- If already paused, reactivate immediately and switch to Maximize Leads mode
- Expect 3 to 6 weeks to return to your previous ranking position
- See our electrician budget guide for month-by-month budget calendars
Mistake 9: Blank or Generic Profile Description MODERATE
Diagnosis: Your profile description is empty, says "Licensed electrician serving the area," or is a copy-paste from your website. Homeowners see your listing but choose competitors with more detailed descriptions.
- Write a description that includes: years of experience, specific specialties (panel upgrades, generators, rewiring), your license type, and what makes you different
- Mention EV charger work if you offer it (no separate job type for this)
- Include your response time commitment ("same-day service" or "emergency calls answered 24/7")
- Keep it under 1,000 characters. Be specific, not generic.
Mistake 10: No Photos or Low-Quality Photos MODERATE
Diagnosis: Your LSA profile has 0 to 3 photos, or the photos are blurry, dark, or show messy work sites. Competitors with 10+ professional-looking photos get more clicks.
- Upload 10 to 15 photos of completed electrical work
- Include: clean panel installs, neat wiring runs, finished lighting projects, generator setups, before/after shots
- Take photos in good lighting. Use your phone's portrait mode for detail shots.
- Update photos quarterly with recent work examples
Mistake 11: Not Tracking Job Type Performance Separately MINOR
Diagnosis: You look at your blended CPL and blended ROAS and think LSA is "okay." But you have no idea whether your panel upgrade leads produce 15x ROAS while your outlet leads lose money.
- Create a simple spreadsheet with columns: lead date, job type, CPL, booked (yes/no), job revenue
- Categorize every LSA lead by job type when you receive it
- Review monthly to calculate ROAS by job type
- Use the data to adjust job type settings and budget. See our ROI benchmarks guide for targets by job type.
Mistake 12: Ignoring Message Leads MINOR
Diagnosis: You have message leads enabled but rarely respond to them, or respond hours later. These leads go cold while you focus only on phone calls.
- Turn on push notifications for LSA messages on your phone
- Respond to every message lead within 5 minutes during business hours
- Use a template: "Hi [Name], thanks for reaching out. I can help with that. When is a good time to discuss?" and then call them.
- If you cannot manage messages, disable them in your LSA settings to avoid paying for leads you ignore. See our message leads guide for the full strategy.

What to Fix First
If you identified multiple mistakes above, here is the priority order that produces the fastest improvement:
Electrician LSA Mistakes FAQs
What is the biggest LSA mistake electricians make?
Having too few job types enabled. Most electricians only enable 3 to 5 job types when there are 12 or more available. Every disabled job type means you are invisible for that entire category of searches. This single mistake can cost 40 to 60% of potential lead volume.
Why am I getting low-quality leads from electrician LSA?
Low quality leads usually come from: service area too broad, job types too narrow, or not disputing invalid leads. Fix your service area first, then expand job types, then start disputing every invalid lead weekly.
Should electricians dispute LSA leads?
Yes, dispute every invalid lead within 30 days. Most electricians leave 10 to 20% of their budget on the table by not disputing. The credits go back into your budget to generate real leads.
Why did my electrician LSA stop getting leads?
Sudden lead drops are usually caused by: expired license or insurance, budget cap reached, Max Per Lead cap too low, or a drop in response rate. Check your LSA dashboard for alerts first.
How many reviews does an electrician need for LSA to work?
At least 20 to appear consistently, but 50 or more with a 4.8+ star rating is the competitive floor. Below 20, Google lacks enough trust signal to rank you well regardless of budget.
